King's Cross Learning Resources Centre
I have been using the Kings Cross LRC recently with my Entry 3 group and just wanted to comment on what a transformation there has been since this building first opened. I remember when the Centre first opened, there were café style tables, encouraging large groups of students to use the space as a break out area.
Also computers which could be booked next to friends, certainly causing a lot of noise and disruption to those trying to study. The new booking system and single file desks, make the LRC look and feel a much more pleasant and professional environment to be in. I was very impressed with the display areas too.
Regards
Steph Yoon

EBSCO Workshop
WKC KX LRC co-hosted the EBSCO ‘Lunch and Learn’ workshop which looked at the benefits of using a federated search engine (Discovery). Discovery simultaneously searches multiple on-line resources. Participants included members from UKSG a National Organisation which “exists to encourage the exchange of ideas on printed and electronic serials and the process of scholarly communication". The participants were given a tour of the LRC and were impressed with the facilities and services on offer to students.

Reading Ahead Ceremony
On Tuesday Feb 2, 2016, the LRC held the Reading Ahead Ceremony. An enrichment programme which challenges students to choose six reads (such as: newspapers, poems, plays, websites, books and more) and write reviews. A total of 30 students took part in the scheme and they were recognized by being awarded certificates
The college also gave special awards of book tokens worth £25 or a pocket dictionary to 6 students for their excellent work during the scheme. The awards were presented by our Centre Vice Principal Kim Caplin.
Well done to:
1) Jacqueline Camara - who was the first student to complete her diary after reading 6 books
2) Futurehope Chinazaekpere Obiji - who produced the best reviews of course related readers for A ’Levels
3) Remon Tefaj – who produced the best reviews/comments from the BTEC Business Group
4) Arzuo Sedighi – who produced the best ESO reviews
5) Shera Jum Munira Islam – who also produced the best ESOL reviews
6) Raveena Sharma – who not only produced excellent reviews but also started preparation of a further reading list for the next Reading Ahead Challenge

Message to teaching staff
I would like to call your attention that you still have learning Centre inductions to book or cancelled inductions to reschedule. We’ll be as flexible as we can to find time slots that work for you so that all students can be inducted to the learning Centre.
The inductions allow us to make sure everyone have the same knowledge and opportunity to take advantage of the resources available to them so we do need reach everyone. It would help us enormously if you would book your inductions as soon as possible. If you are still uncertain about the time we can always make a provisional booking and reschedule it if necessary.
King’s cross learning Centre
Thank you for working with us on this.
